Favorite story:
One hot summer day on a late Saturday afternoon, I was on the air at the 50kW powerhouse WAPE (the Mighty 690) in Jacksonville, FL. I was really playing some great oldies that I had put in the rotation and the tempo was fast!

The weekend engineer came in the control room with a big smile on his face and said he was really getting into the music, and then he walked out of the studio. Later, he called me up on the intercom and said, "I've got Big Mama turned up now." I didn't know exactly what he was talking about but I did turn around and look at the AM BR-2 50kW transmitter and noticed all of the meters were buried and the big tubes were glowing!

Much later I learned that the BR-2 transmitter was a "Home Brew" transmitter and it was quite capable of churning out close to 100kW. That's a 100kW on the AM band on the U.S. side of the border. I've always wondered just how far and where the BIG APE signal went that day...
