Jim Rose remembers:
*When I was a DJ at WFAA in Dallas, WFAA still shared frequencies 570 kc
and 820 kc with WBAP in Ft. Worth. At 10 seconds before midnight, I was
supposed to give the ID "This is WFAA 820, Dallas, Texas." Flip a switch
at 5 seconds before midnight and give the ID "This is WFAA 570, Dallas,
Texas." The WBAP DJ was supposed to do the same with reversed IDs. The 1st
time I did it, I flipped the switch first at 10 seconds before midnight,
and gave the 820 ID over the WBAP DJ's 570 ID! No one ever said a word to
me about it.
*Another story is about when I was DJing on the 820 clear channel
frequency, heard all over the United States. I was giving away a set of
encyclopedias to the person who mailed in the most song titles with the
word "Rose" or "Roses" to promote my last name of Rose. I received
envelopes addressed to Jim Rhodes, Roads, Rodes and also to David Rose
which contained all the songs they could come up with the word "Rose!"
That showed me early on that people hardly pay any attention to a lot of
what we DJs say!
*When at clear channel WFAA 820 in Dallas, a woman would call me every
night long distance from Mayfield, KY holding me on the phone as long as
she could! It got to where I hated to answer the phone!
*The movie "Play Misty For Me" just about describes what I went through
with a woman here in Houston for nearly 5 years! She would tell DJs that
she was my fiance to get my new addresses! I moved all over the place to
get away from her! One night, I was coming around the corner, where I
lived, UP SHE JUMPED FROM THE BUSHES! Another time, she chased me in her
car on busy I-10, busted windows at two different apartments and even
busted a door in at another! I think my 'One on One, communication on the
radio had gotten too good or something!
*All you ever hear about STALKERS is from movie stars or David Letterman,
but we DJs have our share, too!
*In San Antonio, I had a cute young girl show up at my door one night
talking to me like we were old buddies! After a few words, I recognised
her voice as one of the many that call every day while I am on the air! I
asked her how she found where I lived! She said she and her girlfriend
followed me after I got off the air at 6pm, watched me gas up my car,
followed me over 3 major freeways to my home many miles away from the
station!
*Another one did the same at another San Antonio apartment. She told me
when I had invited her into the remote broadcast unit, she got my address
off my checkbook as I was talking on the air!
*Another one showed up at my Ft. Worth apartment drunk, pushing her way
inside my apartment! She grabbed hold of a chair to keep me from pulling
her out of my apartment!
*Another Ft. Worth girl showed up at one other apartment late one night,
while my girlfriend was with me! My girlfriend refused to believe me when
I said that I did not know the other girl!
*I have been at several radio stations that changed formats, ownership and
management! Three that changed from Rock to Country!
*There are many other stories good enough to write a book about my 30
years of DJing experiences all over Texas! I was on over 35 different
Texas radio stations! Twice at KILT, once, on 2 different Ft. Worth radio
stations having to use a different name on one of them! Radio is so much
fun and exciting! I miss it so much! Not the STALKERS, but playing good
music for folks and receiving thanks from them!
